I turned this tray of a large poplar board that had been recovered by my father several years ago. It is amazing that, after so many years, the dark green of the duramen is still so sharp against the creamy poplar herb. All the coloring on this piece is natural for the wood; no stains or dyes were used to get dramatic color variations.
After lighting the round of this tray, I sanded it silky smooth and applied several layers of a natural tung oil finish, which is safe food. It is probably better to use it for dry foods such as fruits or nuts rather than using it as a serving dish for hot or moist foods. Simply wipe it with a damp cloth and dry completely; do put in the dishwasher or microwave. The tray measures 14.75 \"in diameter and is 1.9\". The underside is signed and includes the wood species and the year it was completed.
